1-2Forasmuch
as many undertook to compile a narrative about the acts accomplished*
among us, just as those who from the beginning had come to be
eyewitnesses and servants of the Enunciation handed over to us, 3-4it also seemed {good} to me, having thoroughly pursued over all things,
to write them to you in sequence, most excellent Theophile, that you
would recognise the sureness of the enunciations about which you have
been informed. 5In the days of
Herodes, King of Judea, there came to be some priest out of Abyah's shift named Zakaryah, and his wife, whose name was
Elishabet, was of Aaron's daughters.
6-7Moreover, both were
righteous in God's sight, living their lives blamelessly by all the commandments
and righteous judgements of Master, but for them, there was no child, forasmuch
as Elishabet was barren and both had got on in their years.
8Now
it came to be, since he performed sacred duties before God in the
proceeding of his shift, 9that
he got by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter into
Master's temple to offer incense, 10and
outside, at the hour of incense {offering}, all the multitude of the
people was praying. 11Moreover,
Master's messenger* appeared to
him standing from out of the right side of the altar of incense, 12so Zakaryah, having caught the sight*,
became agitated, and fear fell upon him. 13However,
the messenger said to him: "Have no fear Zakaryah, for your
supplication was given attention, and your wife Elishabet
will give
birth to a son for you, and you will call his name Yohan, 14-15and
to you, there will be joy and jubilation, and many will be rejoiced over
his birth for he shall be great in the sight of Master, and he will be
filled with holy spirit still {not yet} out of his mother's womb*, but he
certainly*
should not drink wine and alcohol. 16Also,
he will turn back many of the children of Yishrael over to Master, their God,
17and he will go
ahead right in front of Him in the spirit and power of Elyah, to turn
back over to children the hearts of parents, {to turn back} the
incredulous ones to the thoughtfulness of the righteous, {and} to make
ready for Master an equipped
people." 18And
Zakaryah said to the messenger: "What will get me to know that?
For I am an old man and my wife has gotten on in her years." 19As
an answer, the messenger said to him: "I am Gabriel, who has been
standing next to God, in His sight, and I was commissioned to speak to
you and declare these good messages to you. 20And lo and behold! You will be mute and not able to speak until that day
producing these things come, because you did no believe in my enunciations,
which will be fulfilled in their due time."
21Now
the people were anticipating Zakaryah and were wondering at his
lingering in the temple, 22but on coming out,
he was unable to speak, so he was gesturing to them, and they
recognised that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he continued to be mute,
23and it came to
be, as the days of his ministry were fulfilled, that he went away to his
house. 24Moreover,
after these days, his wife Elishabet conceived and hid herself
five months saying: 25"Thus has Master designed, in which days He
considered* to remove my
discredit among mankind".
26Now
in the sixth month, Gabri'el the messenger was commissioned [by / from]
God into a city of Galilaia (the name of which is Nazaret), 27toward
a virgin who had been engaged to a man named Yoseph, out of the house of
David; and
the name of the virgin was Mariam. 28Entering
toward her then, (the messenger*) said: "Rejoice, Graced
one; Master is with you (blessed one among
women*)". 29Moreover,
(catching the sight,*) she was startled over [the / his] enunciation,
and was pondering what sort of greeting this could be. 30The messenger
then said to her: "Do not fear Mariam, for you found grace
with God 31and lo and behold!
you will conceive in {your} womb, and you will give birth to a son, and you will
name him Jesus. 32This one shall be
great, and he will be called Son of the Most High, and Master God will give him
the throne of David his father, 33and he will reign
over the house of Jacob into eternity, and there shall be no end of his
kingship". 34Moreover
Mariam said to the messenger: "How shall that be, since I am no
intimate with a man?" 35So,
in answer, the messenger said to her: 'Holy Spirit will fall upon
you, and the power of the Most-High will overshadow you, hence The one
born holy* (out of you*) will be called Son
of God. 36And
lo-and-behold! your kinswoman Elishabet: she has conceived a son in her
old age, and this is to her the sixth month, the so-called barren, 37because
no utterance with God will be impracticable.' 38So
Mariam said: 'Behold! Master's servant girl. May it happen to
me according to your words'. And The Messenger departed from her.
39Arising
then in these days, Mariam went her way with haste into a city of Judah,
in the mountainous region, 40and
she entered into Zekharyah's house, and greeted Elishabbet. 41And
it came to be, as Elishabbet heard the greeting of Mariam, that the baby
in her womb leaped, and Elishabbet was filled of holy Spirit, 42and
she exclaimed in great clamour and said: 'Blessed
are you among women!! And blessed is
the fruit of your womb!! 43And
how is this mine that the mother of my Sovereign would come to me? 44For
look! As the sound of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped
in my womb in jubilation. 45And
blissful is she that believed, because*
there shall be an accomplishment of what Master has spoken to her."
46Now
Mariam said: "My soul magnifies Master, 47and
my spirit jubilates over God my Saviour 48because
He looked upon the lowliness of His servant girl, for look! from now on,
all generations will count me blissful, 49because
the powerful One designed great things for me, and holy is His name, 50and
His mercy to those fearing him is for generations (and
generations*)*.
